rapid mixer Granulator

Model: ARMG

Rapid Mixer Granulator is widely used equipment  in pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is used to mix the pharmaceutical ingredients and make the granules before compression and also called a high shear mixer. Impellers and Choppers are mainly responsible for wet granulation in the rapid mixer granulator.

Components of RMG

Rapid Mixer Granulator having different parts like Impeller, Chopper, Discharge port, Pneumatic system and control panel etc. Impeller and chopper are responsible for mixing and break granules mass. Discharge points are connected horizontally at the lower part of RMG. The discharge point is operated automatically with the help of a pneumatic pump( required 3-5 kg/cm2 compressed air pressure)


A. Impellers

The impeller is designed at the bottom of the SS Grade 316 dome-shaped bowl. The impeller mixes the dry powder uniformly and prepares a wet mass after the addition of the binder. It consists of two large blades ( responsible for mix the dispensed materials) and two small blades( responsible for lifting the dispensed materials ) that are operated at a lower speed at starting during binder addition. These impellers break up the wet mass into small pieces and granules.


B. Choppers

Choppers are specially designed small blades located at the bottom of the dome. It has very sharp small blades which are specially designed to cut the wet lumps of material into very small parts which are then mixed equally by the impellers and its speed is responsible for size of the granules. It rotates at high speed (1440/2880 RPM) to give easy and uniform granulation. Choppers doesn't have any significant effect on the granule size when impeller speed is high (above 200 RPM).


C. Discharge Port 

A discharge port is located horizontally at bottom of the dome. Granules are unloaded in the container through the discharge part. The opening of the discharge port is operated by a compressed air regulated cylinder known as pneumatic cyclinder that requires 3-5 kg/cm2 pressure of compressed air. 


D. Control Panel

The control panel is mounted on the platform and has ON/OFF, FAST/SLOW  and AUTO/MANUAL controls. There are timer, indicators lights, controls for Discharge Opening/Closing, Air Regulator and Pressure Gauge.

Working of rapid mixer granulator

  • After Loading the ingredients in the RMG, the formation of granules occurs by the impeller which sets the entire mixture in a spinning tumbling motion which results in distribution of all Dry Granules as well as Wet Granules. 
  • The large lumps formed during wet mixing are broken up by the chopper.
  • Dry Mixing is done by adding all ingredients into the RMG by rotation of impeller and chopper at high speed.
  • During the addition of Binder solutions to the powder, both the Impeller and chopper are operated at slow speed.
  • After formation of wet mass, the speed of Impeller  and Chopper are operated at high speed to obtain the required size of Granules. 
  • Then the wet granules can be discharged with the impeller running through the outlet located on the side of the mixing bowl flush to the bottom. 
  • Dry Mixing takes about 3 - 5 minutes to mix the ingredients. 
  • Wet Mixing takes 5 - 10 minutes to make the wet mass of material. 
  • Granulation process takes 5 - 10 minutes to make 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm sized granules. 

Note: Mixing time consumed in processing is depends upon the ingredients quantity and their particle size.
